Types of Quarries

In North America, quarrying is most often associated with deep pits. The top of the pit may be blasted off to get to the deeper rock, and pumps keep water from accumulating in the bottom. Boulder quarries are rocks left behind by glaciers, and the colonists who arrived in the 1600s used them extensively. Surface ledge quarries are exposed areas of stone on hillsteps, and the top layers are blasted off and split.
